The weekend of February 20, our friends Paula and Ro came to visit.
We started Friday afternoon with happy hour and a beer tasting. That evening we went the High Heat Sports Grill for food, beer and trivia. Trivia was tough that night, but we had a fun time. Back at our place we played a couple round of Hitster. Our niece Gaby gave us Hitster for Christmas. We had more fun playing Hitster than trivia. I think Paula and Ro are going to buy their own copy.
Saturday morning started with some croissants that Paula brought and a delicious frittata made by Karla. When we were done eating, we got ready and I drove to Fort Huachuca. The main visitor’s gate is not open on the weekends so we went to the Buffalo Soldier Gate. We stopped before the gate and parked in the visitor’s lot. We each had to go into the office, one at a time, and get a background check and a pass. They checked our IDs, asked us for our social security number and took our picture. It only took about five minutes for each of us. Now we have our passes that are good for a year. I brought in my vehicle registration, but they did not need that. The base is big and spread out. It took a few minutes to drive to the first museum. There was a lot of history of the fort, the surrounding areas and the Buffalo Soldiers. Fort Huachuca served as a primary home for the Buffalo Soldiers from 1913 until the early 1930s. There was also a nice book store with a helpful volunteer. We got a paper with pictures of some of the other historic buildings, but it was hard to tell where they were. Nearby was another building with aviation history and outside of that was the Brown Parade Field. We walked along the interpretive path through the parade ground and ended at the Buffalo Soldier statue.
We drove around some more and went to the military intelligence museum. More interesting stuff and a placard about Colonel Thomas Knowlton for whom our street was named.
We stopped at the commissary because Ro (a veteran) wanted to see if she could buy stuff there. She could. We all went in and looked around but the prices were nothing special. From there we went to the cemetery and looked around a little. We made one more stop at Reservoir hill. It is the highest spot in the fort and has great views of the valley and Sierra Vista. Fort Huachuca was interesting and I am glad we went and spent a few hours there.
After the fort, we went to Tombstone Brewing West End. We had a delicious late lunch and some tasty beer. We were ready for some down time, so we went to our place and relaxed.
That evening we went to the Sierra Vista Community Theatre production of Meteor Shower. It was an interesting play with some really good acting. The play was written by Steve Martin, so it was not surprising that the play was hilarious and we were howling with laughter.
After the play, we went back to our place. We had a little more beer and some snacks before calling it a night.
Sunday morning Paula and Karla made a delicious breakfast of eggs and cheesy potatoes. After breakfast and packing, Paula & Ro hit the road. I am really glad they came to visit. We always have a fun time together.
