One of the reasons we stopped in Tulsa was to see the Jay Farrar/Son Volt exhibit at the Woody Guthrie Center. The Woody Guthrie Center doesn’t open until 10:00am so we had a little time to sleep in. We got ready and walked to the Chimera Cafe. Karla had a tasty breakfast taco and latte, I had a tasty breakfast burrito and a gold rush juice.
After breakfast, we still had some time so we did some more walking and went to John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park. It is a very nice park with statues and plaques about the history of the area.

A little more walking and the Woody Guthrie Center was open. We were the first guests through the door. After a look at some fantastic photos of the hospital where Woody stayed, we checked out the Melody of Riot, the Jay Farrar exhibit. It was small but impressive. The first thing I noticed was a video that was playing on a video monitor. It was from the New Multitudes era and it included Anders Parker, Jim James, and Will Johnson. There was a nice selection of Son Volt, and a couple Uncle Tupelo items. And it was cool to see Will Johnson.
We went through the Woody Guthrie exhibits and were impressed with the display of instruments, art and original hand written lyrics. There were also a lot of videos stations with stories about Woody’s life. We did not have enough time to listen to everything but I think we got a good selection.
There was also an awesome photo exhibit by Glen E. Friedman including punk, hip hop, and skate boarding.

After the museum, we made our way back to the hotel. We checked out and got on the road again. We headed west and thought about lunch. I had done some research and asked Karla to check out Guthrie Brewing in Guthrie OK. Are they open and do they have food? Yes and yes. It was on our way so we stopped for some beer and pizza.
From Guthrie we drove to Amarillo Texas. It was a long drive across western Oklahoma.
We checked into The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery. It is a tourist trap that also has a hotel, RV park, cabins and Conestoga wagons that can be rented. We got a hotel room. After a long day, I just wanted a place where we could eat, sleep and visit a brewery at the same location.

After we got settled in our room, we walked to the restaurant. It was very busy and we put our name on the list for a table. We got some drinks and found some nice rockers out back to sit and wait. The IPA I got was not great so I went back in to try something else. Before I could get my second beer, our table was ready.
Not a great table; we were at the end of a long shared table by the kitchen. But it turned out great. We talked to the people next to us and our server was wonderful. While we were there, three men tried the 72 oz steak challenge. We were there long enough to see two fail, and the third didn’t look good.
We got a lot of food including 5 oz filets, a rib sample, salads and more. Karla got some wine and I got the double IPA. It was better than the regular IPA, so I got a second. Karla got some coconut cake for dessert and everything was delicious.
We made one more stop in the gift shop and bought a couple things. We went back to the room and called it a night.

Remember when Anders Parker & Will Johnson played a show at our house in Minneapolis? That was pretty cool.
