Saturday we were not up too early. When everyone was ready we walked down the hill to the High Desert Market for some tasty breakfast items. We walked around and looked in some shops and stopped at Patisserie Jacqui for some sweets. They have some fantastic treats. We walked around some more and looked for the schedule for the day. We poked our heads in a couple spots and heard music coming from Poco Restaurant + Market. There were some places to sit so we went in and listened. Smooth Hands was playing and we stayed for the rest of their set. They had a song called Winding Down (or something) that got pretty slow, then they kicked into Winding Up and that was more fun and energetic.
We went back to the rental and to get ready for the rest of day. The schedule finally came out and we looked at the list and made some plans. Giovanni Kiyingi was on the local radio station and Karla got it going on the Alexa. The DJ asked Giovanni if this was his first time in the sates. Giovanni said, ah, I live in Phoenix.
The first thing we had to see was Roger! At 2:00. So we had some time to wander around. We walked down the hill to the gulch. We stuck our heads in Chuckleheads because we had never been there before. Darwathustra Experiment was playing. They were loud and metal and we did not stay. We went across to the Old Bisbee Brewery and went to the courtyard. It was packed for LOSJONES. Including a lot of family with LOSJONES shirts. We got a round of beers at the outside counter. We waited around and some seats opened up. LOSJONES was very professional and had some great looking instruments. They had a Grateful Dead vibe and were pretty jammy.
Now it was time to go to the Bisbee Social Club for Roger! We made a quick stop for some Sidepony merch. Karla continued straight to the Social Club but I got distracted by a street burrito and Paula and Ro were still looking at merch. There was a decent crowd when we got there and Karla had saved us some seats on the music side. Paula got a couple Tombstone IPAs that we split. Roger! Was kinda power pop, kinda rock-n-roll. We enjoyed their set.
The next artist we wanted to see was Giovanni Kiyngi at the Courtyard. It was crowded and we found a place to stand. Giovanni had a full band with drums, electric guitar, keyboard, bass and two additional singers. Everyone looked like they were having a great time. They played world music and some reggae. I was hoping he would play more instruments. He did play xylophone for one song and he was great.
Next on our schedule was the Whiskey Lickers at the Jonquil Motel. It was a ways away, and we had seen the Whiskey Lickers before, but we had not been to the Jonquil before so we went. The walk took longer than expected and it was getting cool in the shadows. But the Jonquil has a nice setup and the Whiskey Lickers were fun. They had drinks for a donation. We got a round and found some seats and listened to the music. After the Whiskey Lickers were done I bought a t-shirt.
We headed back and the walk felt shorter. We were going near the rental, so Paula, Ro and I stopped to get some warmer clothes. I grabbed a sweatshirt for Karla and we headed back out. I found Karla at Tequiria Outlaw. It was busy and Paula and Ro left to find another place. I sat at the bar with Karla and ordered a beer and some nachos. Karla had some tacos and the food was really good. We will probably go back. When we finished, we didn’t have anything on our schedule so we walked over to the Bisbee Grand for Flicker: A One Man Band. There was a good crowd there and we stood in the back. He had an accordion and a drum on his back but I did not hear him using them too much. He also had a kazoo and a whistle. We did not need to stay and we wanted to get to the Exbats early, so we left and went to Poco. Rad Pinckard was playing when we got there. We got a couple beers and found a place to stand. He was solo acoustic had had some exciting energy. Kind of interesting.
When Rad was done, a table by the stage opened up. We took it and saved some chairs. Paula and Ro joined us. The Exbats were great. Fun pop/garage rock from a band started by a daughter and her father.
There was an overlap of performance and we wanted to be sure to catch at least a little of Carol with her whole band. So we left the Exbats before they were done and went to St Elmo. Carol Pacey & the Honey Shakers were playing when we got there. It was pretty fun and Karla and I went on the floor by the band. It was good time bluesy rock-n-roll.
When they were done, Paula and Ro went back to the rental. Karla and I sat at the bar and had a drink. Carol came over and talked with us. Around 9:00 we walked to the Copper Queen to listen to the Little Room Band. We sat near the back of the bar and only listened a little. We stayed long enough to be there for Doug Preston and the Faultless 3. But by this time we were having a great conversation with another couple and did not listen to the band. We cold see Giovanni getting ready to play next. But it had been a long day and I suggested going back and sitting in the hot tub. We did that. We had a beer in the hot tub and relaxed.
Wow. Another day of the Sidepony Express Music Festival. One more day to go.
