Sidepony 2024 – Friday

Friday I had to work in the morning. Paula, Ro & Karla went for a walk. For lunch Ro drove to the Thirsty Lizard Bar & Grill outside of town. It had been on my list but I never had enough reason to go there. Paula & Ro had heard from someone it was good. We got a table and looked at the menu. The menu was arranged by flavors: hot, very hot, cinnamon, garlic, cheese, I don’t remember. There were so many and there was way too much on the menu. Everyone ended up getting tacos. They were pretty good, but not worth going out there again. We headed back and stopped at Ballpark Brewing. They did not have a sign out front and they only had two beers of their own. I got the rye IPA and Karla got the blonde. They were ok. We went back to the rental and the lineup for the night had been released. We looked at the schedule and made some notes and headed out on foot. Our first stop was Old Bisbee Brewery. It was red flannel Friday so we got pictures with the regulars.

We got some beer and found a table inside. We could hear some music outside but we stayed inside. Ro went outside and listened for a bit. It may have been Fatigo BZB. When they loaded out, they came by our table. Ro said something like: thanks for playing. He replied: at least someone gives a crap. At 4:00 we went to Gene’s Place for Carol Pacey & Andy Borunda. We had seen then last time we were here at Room 4 and we wanted to see them again. They are a good acoustic duo. She tells some good stories and he is a great guitar player. We got a round of Hamm’s as we hung out. After their set we hung around and talked with them. Once we talked a bit, Carol remembered us and we bought some t-shirts.

Our next stop was the Copper Queen and we  listened to a little King Summer. I did not pay a lot of attention and we sat at a table in the back. We went back to the rental for a break and some food. We headed back out and we to Gene’s for Giovanni Kiyingi. He was someone I had heard on the Spotify playlist I created. He started at 6:00 and I think we missed the beginning. He was solo and has a great voice. He also played an instrument I did not recognize that was very interesting. It was like a big guitar with at least 20 strings and a big round resonating chamber. It was played with the neck projecting straight out. Very interesting. He said he was playing with the whole band tomorrow and we made a note to check it out.

We did not have anything at 7:00 so we went to the Courtyard because it is a cool venue. We went into the bar area and talked with the bartender for a bit. She let us look upstairs at a little sleeping area that artists sometimes use. We went back to the courtyard area and got some seats on a low wall.  Tara Lynn Walrus sang and played guitar and ukulele. She was interesting singer/songwriter with giant Gene Simmons KISS boots. We talked with her after for a bit.

From there we went to Room 4. I knew who was playing and I figured it would be crowded. I also wasn’t sure how everyone would react. We went into the bar and got a round of drinks. Then we went to the patio and only could get as far as the steps. It worked out. We had a place to stand and a good view. 20 ft. Neon Jesus started shortly after we got there. He was dressed in white with a log red silk scarf, and a white skull cap. He had a light up neon cross and an empty bottle of Hennessy with lights in it. He sang about the church of crunkology. He was very funny and everyone laughed.

After that, Paula and Ro went back to the rental. Karla and I went down to the Bisbee Social Club because I wanted to see Scorpion V. Tarantula. They are punk rock with a lot of energy. I really liked the band and I went up front. Karla mostly stayed towards the back.

We made one more stop at the Copper Queen for the Lolly Bombs.

I was tired and it was late and we headed back to the rental for the night.
