Gulfport Week 1

We are in our last week in Gulfport, Mississippi. On Saturday we start our trip north to Minnesota. I want to get caught up with our adventures so I can add some entries on our way back home. I am going to try to add a couple entries about each week in the area.

 – Our first week in Gulfport –

Our first Monday in Gulfport, we went to Chandulear Brewing. It was busy but we found some spots at the bar. We got some beers and waited for trivia. Exit 28 Entertainment had a good trivia set-up with clipboards and questions on the screens. We did pretty good for a two person team. We missed the last 15 point question. I think if we would have got it right we would have been placed third. It was a fun night and we made it a weekly event.

During the week I had work every day. The weather was not too bad and we both got out and walked around the neighborhood.

On Thursday after work we to downtown Gulfport. I drove and after trying to turn at the wrong place, found a spot to park. It was a little rainy and we didn’t want to spend a lot of time walking around. We were close to The Rack and I said we should check it out. We went in and found a couple spots at the bar. It looked like there were a bunch of spots that had just left and we had missed happy hour. We were informed that we still had 17 minutes. So Karla got a wine and I got an old fashioned. The old fashioned tasted really good and was just the right thing to have after work. We also ordered bacon wrapped scallops. It sounded good but they were way over done and looked bad. They were rubbery and the bacon was barley wrapped around the scallops. Really disappointing. I had finished my old fashioned so I got a Lil Smack IPA. Once I finished my beer, we paid our bill and left. I had high expectations for the Rack, but I was let down.

From there we walked down Fishbone Alley and checked out the art and murals painted on buildings. I thought it was kinda cool.

It was still raining so we wanted to find another place. We walked around the block and looked in a few places and decided on Murky Waters BBQ. It was a little busy but we found some spots at the bar. We got a couple beers and the Karla suggested the sausage, onion and cheese platter. Yes please. Good sausage and cheese. And the onions were deep fried crispy onions. Good stuff. We got some more beer and then ordered a sampler with ribs and brisket and collard greens and Mac and cheese. The meat was great as were the greens. The Mac and cheese was just ok. We ate most of it but I took home the cheese from the first platter. We took our leftovers and headed back to our rental.

During the week we also watched some of the NCAA basketball tournament.

On Saturday we went to the Ohr-O’Keef Museum of Art in Biloxi. Once again I took a wrong turn, too early, for the parking lot. Not a big deal. The campus and buildings were designed by Frank Gehry and the buildings are spread out between majestic live oaks. There is an outstanding collection of pottery by George E. Ohr the “Mad Potter of Biloxi”. There is also an exhibit of Frank Gehry and some models of his projects. We also visited an exhibit called “City Within a City” that told the story of segregated Biloxi during the post-WWII years.

When we were done with the museum it was time for lunch so we went to Fly Llama Brewing. We went inside and sat at the bar and tasted a few beers. I went out and put in an order for some burgers at the premiant food truck called Hungry Llama. Mine had pulled pork on it and it was pretty tasty. We tried another beer and got some to go. I didn’t have a lot of ideas of what else to do in Biloxi. We looked at the Mardi Gras Museum bit it was closed. I saw a mini golf course on the way in so thought that would be fun. When I searched for the course I could not find it, but I found a different course, Lava Links, not too far away. I used Google for directions and it took me to a casino. For a moment I thought it was going to be inside the casino. But then I saw it around the side. They had two courses and we took the one with more hills and less water. Not the easiest one we have played. But it was a nice day and it was good to be outside. There was another brewery in Biloxi so we went there next. Altered Reality Brewing had been open less than a week and only had two beers on tap. We got one of each. Nothing special. They also had cupcakes so we had some of those. We talked to the person behind the bar for a while and asked her about things to do in Biloxi. She mentioned a couple things and we headed back towards downtown. We saw a sign for an art district so we headed that way and found a place to park.

We visited Gallery 782 Co-Art. There were multiple artists and lots of interesting stuff. Just down the street was a Marley’s Music record shop. We looked around for a while and I was intrigued by a few things but did not buy anything. We talked about going to another bar based on a friend’s suggestions, but one wasn’t open and the other one did not look too interesting. So we headed back toward Gulfport. Karla wanted to stop and get some wine so we went downtown to Brack Water Wine & Spirits. She picked out some wine and I grabbed a bottle of bourbon. We were parked right by Kelly’s Sports Pub so we went inside. Smoking was allowed inside but it was not too busy. We got some spots at the bar. They had a couple decent beers on tap. We also got some snacks. They had TouchTunes but I had to ask then to turn up the volume. We played a few tunes and had another round. That was about it. We went back to the rental and watched some more of the NCAA basketball tournament.

Watch for more tomorrow. . .
