Saturday, February 3, we packed up and left our place in Port St. Lucie. We drove straight through to Jacksonville. We tried to go to Intuition Ale Works, but all the roads around it were closed and when we drove by, Karla said it didn’t look open. I knew we wanted to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) , so I put that in the GPS and found a spot to park close by. Wasn’t too hard to find a spot and it was free on Saturday. Then we searched for nearby restaurants. Karla found Spliff’s and we walked there. Turned out to be a good stop. We sat at the counter and talked with the server. I interrupted everyone when I saw they had Karate In The Garage on tap. They had some other good selections as well. I got mac and cheese with pulled pork and Karla got a steak sandwich. Good food. As we talked to the server, she looked up Intuition and said it was closed. A few days before, there was a fire at a nearby apartment. They are in the process of tearing down the apartment building and all the businesses in the area are closed because of the hazard of the apartment building. After lunch, because it was just around the corner, we walked to Ruby Beach Brewing. They had a good beer selection and we tried a couple. We walked back to the MOCA and were greeted by a very friendly person who told us about the exhibits. The exhibit Walk on the Wild Side, is a collection from a person who moved from Florida to New York in the 70s. He got involved with an Avant Gard art movement and collected a lot of items. Some of it was video and pictures of what happened and what they did, but I found it very fascinating. There were two floors and we spent a good amount of time checking it out. There were items from Yoko Ono and a video of Einstein on the Beach. After the MOCA we had to drive to our hotel, and as long as we were in the truck, we went and checked out another brewery. On the recommendation of the woman at Spliff’s, we went to King Maker Brewery. Kind of warehouse-y. We went into the tap room and there was a small bar but no open seats. So we each got a beer and wandered around a bit. They had an outdoor space and a large warehouse. There were a couple pool tables and people playing pool. We found a couch to sit on and there was a giant connect four game. We played a few rounds as we finished our beer. There was nothing else on the menu that we had to have so we closed our tab. There just happened to be another brewery just a block away. We walked across the railroad tracks to Bold City Brewery and found a place at the bar there and got a beer. The beer was not as interesting but they had a food menu. I suggested getting some food and taking it to the hotel. We put in an order for a pizza and a salad to go. From there it was a short drive to the hotel. We had to change rooms because there was a dog barking next to our first room. I plugged in my firestick and we watched the Gopher basketball game while we ate pizza and salad. The pizza was a little disappointing, but the Gophers beat Northwestern. By the time we were done, it was time to head to the show. It was a short walk to Jack Rabbits Live and the show was already going. They Hate Change was playing and we worked our way towards the stage to get a better listen. It was a duo wearing white shirts and bolo ties. They had a lot of fast pace hip hop and were a lot of fun. The second band was Hotline TNT. They had three guitars, as bass and drums. It was loud and muddy and I am not sure they needed three guitars. But they were enthusiastic and kinda fun. The last band was Wednesday and the band that got us to go in the first place. I was a little underwhelmed. They did not have the energy the first bands had and buy this time I was a little tired. We listened and moved around a little and the sound was better further back. We walked back to the hotel and were soon asleep.
Sunday we got up and got ready and drove to Tallahassee. It started to rain on our way and it came down pretty hard at times. We drove to Ology Brewing. It is a big place and I do not think there were any other customers there when we got there. We took a couple stools at the bar and ordered some food and beer. The squash soup and the empanadas were really good. The pizza was not as good. Way too much balsamic. We sat and talked and picked out some stuff to go, including a bottle of house made bourbon. We thought we had a lot of time, but before we knew it, it was time to go. We drove to Spring House and got there right on time. Byrd was out by the gate waiting for us under a huge umbrella. Byrd is the daughter of the original owners. She grew up in the house, and after many years away, she is back living there again. She let us in and we parked near the house. The rain was letting up, but we used our umbrella and went inside. Byrd had gotten a little wet so she made herself a cup of hot tea. She offered some to us but we were full from lunch. We sat on the couch and talked. She showed us some books that had information on the house. I liked seeing the original plans and the actual home that got built. There was a plan for a pool and a circular wall. Byrd said the restoration may someday include some kind of pool, but not the wall. It would obstruct the view. The original plans also called for in-floor heat, but it was too late for that. It would require tearing up the floor. Byrd said they could not afford it at the time the house was built. She also told use some stories about growing up in the house. We toured the small kitchen and then went upstairs and looked at the bathrooms and bedrooms. By this time the rain had stopped so we went outside. We walked around a bit and checked out the pond. Before we left, Byrd took our picture by the house. We spent almost two hours there and it was a great visit. When we left, I did a quick search and found Lake Tribe Brewing was just a few minutes away. We drove there and got some beer and used the bathroom. They had some interesting stuff, but we did not get anything to go. From there we drove to Santa Rosa Beach. We found the place that Kevin & Emily are renting and let ourselves in. Kevin & Emily are in Mexico and we had a week there. We unpacked and got settled and started making some supper. Bob & Lisa stopped by and we all enjoyed a drink together. Bob & Lisa left and Karla and I finished our chicken curry. We relaxed and watched a little tv.
