We made another move. Originally it was just going to be two days with a night in Marietta. But that was going to be two long days and we had some time, so we decided to explore more of the American Southeast.
We left Little Rock a day early. Or half a day. I had the afternoon off so we packed up on Friday, December 8 and headed to Oxford, MS. We started out on the interstate but then went off and took some backroads through Arkansas and Mississippi. We went through Robert Johnson’s crossroads, but there was not much to see from the highway. In Oxford it was a busy Friday night. We checked into the Graduate Hotel and went out on foot. We stopped at Circle and Square Brewing (narrowly escaping getting hit at a crosswalk) for some beer and a big ass buttery pretzel. We walked back to the town square and checked out a few places. A lot of places had private parties and others were crowed. We stopped in Proud Larry’s, Off Square Books, End of All Music, and Moe’s Original BBQ. We headed back to the hotel and stopped at the hotel bar The Coop. It was also busy but we stopped in for a nightcap.
Saturday morning we had a little hotel breakfast and headed east. We stopped in Birmingham at the Grocery Brewpub. Their web site said they made their own beer and had food. When we got there, I was told they no longer made their own beer. We left and went next door to the Battery. It was busy but we got some spots at the bar and had a good lunch. We continued on and went to the Hilton in Marietta. We took a Lyft from the hotel and met our nephew Trent at Glover Park Brewery. It was busy with a lot of people in Christmas garb. We got a round of beer and caught up with Trent. From there we went to Red Hare. We got another round of beers and talked some more. The beer was better at Red Hare than Glover Park. We wanted to get some food so we walked to Two Birds Taphouse. We were told the wait for a table was two hours and fifteen minutes. We left and went to Marietta Pizza. We got a table right away. The service, pizza and beer was good. After pizza, we made one more stop and went to Johnnie MacCracken’s Celtic Firehouse Pub. We got a round of drinks, went outside and hung out for a while. A band got on stage and played one Irish song and left. I guess that was their sound check. I got a house IPA and we talked some more and people watched. The band came back and started their set. But I was tired and we got a Lyft and went back to the hotel. I hooked up our Firestick, and after getting some batteries from the hotel, we watched some Gopher basketball. I was asleep before it was over.
Sunday we were not up early. Originally we were going to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Spring House in Tallahassee. I had been emailing with my contact and she said rain was predicted all day and it was not a good day for a tour. So we took our time in the morning and had some hotel breakfast. We headed south on the interstate for a while but then went off on highway 27. It was a nice four lane highway, but there was very little traffic. Much better drive than the interstate. We had a late breakfast and we were going to have a late lunch, so we got some snacks on the road to get us to our next stop. We went to Bainbridge and Southern Philosophy Brewing. We tried some beer and got some salads. Everything was really good and the staff was really nice. Bainbridge has a town square so we walked around a little bit. We walked to the square and in the middle is a status to their confederate dead. From 1936. I did not take a picture. We drove to Tallahassee and checked into the Hyatt. All day the rain was off and on but never too bad. After we checked in we went out and walked around the area. Railroad Square was the next block over. It was Sunday so not much was open. There were a lot of cool murals and we found a book store that was open. We walked over to Oyster City Brewing. We had been to their location in Apalachicola but not this one in Tallahassee. On our way there, it stared to rain and we were pretty wet when we got there. We ordered some beer and we were told they were closing early for a private event, and he would just close out our tab. We finished our beer and asked about place to eat. Just a block away was a Mexican place called the Iron Daisy, so we walked there. I suggested ordering the food to go and bringing it back to the hotel. We ordered some tacos and chips and guacamole. We had some time to wait so Karla ordered a margarita and I ordered a beer. When our food was ready, I looked out the window and it was pouring rain. So I asked for our food and we ate it there. The tacos were good and the guacamole was really good. By the time we finished, the rain had stopped. We walked back, sat on the bed and watched some tv and the Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Monday I had the day off work. Some hotel breakfast and on the road again. Went to the Sunny Pint in Wildwood FL. Lots of beer selections and good food. We then drove straight through to Bonita Springs. Got to Mike & Mary’s and unloaded everything. After we put a few things away we went out and checked out Ceremony Brewing. We had a couple good beers and I got some cans to go. We went back to Mike & Mary’s and heated up some leftovers. I signed into their tv and we watched the Vikings game from Sunday before going to bed.
We will be in Bonita Springs until January 7. It will be nice to stay in the same place for a while.
