Los Angeles

This past weekend we went to Los Angeles. Originally we were going to have company. But when that did not work out, Julie said she could get us tickets to the Austin football match against LAFC in LA. So we made a weekend out of it. We planned ahead and got tickets for the Broad. It was an easy drive to LA and we parked in the Broad parking ramp. We were a little early and we walked around and looked at the Gehry designed Disney Concert Hall. When we went in the Broad, our first stop was Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Room — The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away. We had a little wait, and it was a little more intense than the one we saw a few years ago in Tampa, but I though it was really cool. From there we went to the main gallery on the third floor. There is a really impressive collection of contemporary art that includes pieces by Basquiat, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Koons and more. It was amazing to see so many original Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings. After the museum, we walked to Karl Straus Brewing for lunch. We had some tasty lunch and sampled a couple beers. We had a little time and took the long way back and walked around downtown LA. Then it was time to head to BMO stadium. It was about a 15 minute drive though downtown LA. Not bad at all. We had pre-paid for parking. It was easy to get in and we got a spot right by the stadium. There was some time before the game so we walked around the stadium. Some LAFC fans welcomed us to LA with a shot of whiskey. We found some Austin fans and we talked and they gave me a beer flavored water (something called Coors Light?). We went in and found our seats and Julie and Brent joined us. Good seats and a beautiful day. Unfortunately, Austin lost. After the game we drove to Julie & Brent’s in Anaheim. It was easy to get out of the parking lot and traffic was good on the freeway. We got settled and walked to Craft by Smoke and Fire for some food. It was a busy Saturday night so service was a little poor, but the food was good. We made one more stop at Monkish Brewing for a beer before heading back to Julie & Brent’s.
Sunday we slept in a bit and walked around Anaheim. Julie & Brent made us an excellent brunch. We walked around Anaheim a little more and checked out the Packing District. Everyone went to Unsung Brewing for a beer. I wish I could have tried a few more. Karla & I packed up and headed out. We made one more stop in Anaheim to check out Brewery X. It was a lot bigger than I expected. We got a beer and sat outside. Another beautiful day. It was still early so I decided to take the scenic route home. We went south and up the mountains and into the Mount San Jacinto State Park. As long as we were there we stopped at the Idyllwild Brewpub. We were high enough in the mountains that there was snow around the town. We tried some beer and ate some food. It was good, but nothing special. We headed back down the mountain to Palm Desert.
It was a really fun weekend and I am glad we had the opportunity to do it. We only have a few more days before we start our trip back to Minnesota.
