Saturday we took a day trip to Brownsville, TX.
First stop was the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. We had to drive through a section of the boarder wall to get there. There was boarder patrol at the opening. At the Sanctuary there was a plantation house where we could view a few rooms. There we also a lot of hiking trails and lots of birds. We walked a bit and ended up at an overlook by the Rio Grand. Less than one hundred yards across the river we could see Mexico.
Next we went to the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. There was a nice watercolor exhibit by Don Breeden. The permanent collection was nice but small.
Right outside the museum was the Brownsville Farmer’s Market. We walked around and picked up a few things.
Lunch was at the Vermillion Restaurant and Watering Hole. Good food and big portions.
After lunch we went back to the historic district and visited the Historic Brownsville Museum. Some interesting information on the history of Brownsville and a restored locomotive.
We made one more stop at the Palo Alto Battlefield. However, the visitor center was closed and it was starting to rain, so we did not stay. We headed back and took it easy the rest of the day.
